CHAPTER 14
TAMSYN
The guys pick me up for school on Monday as usual. As we are walking into school, JP grabs me by the elbow, halting my steps. Rafe and Scott turn back to see why weâve stopped but JP gives them a head nod and without a word, they keep walking, leaving me alone with JP.
âYou alright, JP?â I ask, not knowing why heâs stopped me.
âI was going to ask you the same thing,â he says, looking down at me with concern. I let out a sigh as I realise what heâs referring to.
âIâm fine, really. Tate texted me,â I tell him, and I canât help the smile creeping across my face.
His mouth drops open and eyes widen as he says, âWhat? When?â in disbelief because Tate contacted me. I start walking away knowing he will follow me. I donât want to be late for class.
âHe texted me the other night. It was mainly to ask what he said when he was at Quinnâs grave,â I tell JP, hoping he will drop it.
âIs that all?â he asks, suspiciously.
I feel my cheeks heat up as I say, âI think we are still friends. Iâm hoping he will keep texting now.â
He lets out a frustrated sigh of his own, saying, âIâm surprised he texted you sober. I donât want you getting your hopes up Tamsyn. We both know heâs not in a good headspace. I donât want you getting upset if he disappears again.â I slow my steps and face him. Seeing the worry lining his face, I place my fake smile on my face. I had become so accustomed to it in the past, I find it easy to revert back into old patterns.
âIâm honestly okay JP. Donât worry, Iâm not expecting much,â I lie to him, but Iâve perfected this facade so he believes it. The only person who saw through my fake smiles isnât here to call me out on it anymore. I hope if he completely disappears again, my heart has recovered enough to take the hit. JP stares at me for a second longer then nods his head, accepting what Iâve said as truth as we turn to go our separate ways.
It isnât until lunch time I get knocked down, all over again. I hadnât heard from Tate again but that hadnât stopped me from checking my phone constantly for new messages. I grab my tray of food and walk through the door leading outside to the guys bench, where they always have lunch when itâs sunny.
As Iâm approaching theyâve got their heads together and are talking in hushed voices. It looks like they are having a secret meeting. I slow my steps in case I intrude on something, not meant for my ears.
They still havenât noticed me and Iâm nearly at the table so I blurt out, âHey guys,â to get their attention. It has them all jumping out of their seats with guilty expressions on their faces. Whatâs that about? My eyebrows pinch as I glance at each of them in turn.
